About Me
I am Mark Munroe. I specialize in SEO, Product Management and Web Analytics. I live, work and play in the SF Bay area. I am highly focused on the evolution of search, search marketing, local search, online music and online travel.
As far as this blog, it will be yet another observer of the locomotive speeding through our lives, called the Internet. I am most interested in Search, Online Communities, the evolution of the Music Industry, Online Travel (since I have been personally involved in that industry) and in general the digitization of culture, society and the arts which has profoundly changed not just how we live but how we view and value stuff.
Individual things used to have tremendous value - a vinyl record, the broadcast premiere of a movie, information…
Digital technologies and especially the Web has changed all this and has commoditized information…and Google has been the accelerating force. Google has changed many a life…and actually gave me a new one.
I still remember the first time I met Google! Just another pretty Web face it seemed. It was I believe in early 2001 and searching was still a chore. I was starting to use an engine called Northern Lights. Usenet newsgroups were still the centralized place to research discussions and find answers to obscure problems or get info on new products. So Dejanews was my source for searching the newsgroups and then one day it disappeared. Google, in a wise move that captured the serious searchers, acquired Dejanews and slowly sucked me into it’s general search capability.
Back then I was a Network Management expert at the time focused on Optical Networks (Sonet, PON). When Telecom died back in 2001 - my career died as well. Google helped me find a new one, as an SEO specialist which I have expanded into a variety of roles over time (Internet Consulting, Analytics and product management positions at a couple of high-tech startups in Silicon Valley).
And that brings me here - Web Watching!
